Why is everyone talking about decluttering?

Reading Time: 2.5 minutes

Discover 11 ways to reclaim your life, work and mental space.

Generally speaking, our environment is a reflection of what is happening in our minds. For you to successfully grow as a person and leader, you need to understand the importance of creating an environment that matches your values and will assist you in achieving your goals.

“You are a product of your environment. So choose the environment that will best develop you…”
~ W. Clement Stone

Have a close look at what your environment currently looks like, and what it needs to be for you to feel safe and supported so you can reach your goals.

The house

Sometimes, less is more. A Princeton University study found that cluttered homes will wear down on your mental state, as well as negatively impact your decision making. Owning less is far more beneficial than organizing more!

Don’t simply re-organise your stuff without removing it. You can get rid of the items that:

  • Don’t benefit you any more or don’t add value to your life
  • Are not absolutely beautiful or meaningful
  • Are damaged or incomplete, or no longer fit you
  • You have not used in a very long time and have simply become ‘dust collectors’
  • Remind you of someone or something that triggers negative emotions

Time for Action

  • List the places/areas/items in your house that need decluttering. (Start with the easiest, pick a date and time that you work on it – then STOP. Repeat.)
  • To create a sorting system, you can for example use the three-box-method: 1) Donate; 2) Throw out; 3) Keep. What could you for example scan or photograph and then throw out the physical item?
  • What items are in the wrong place? Does it make sense where and how you keep them?
  • What items create negative emotions every time you see or touch or smell them?

The tasks

It is vital to your happiness and success that you use your time wisely. And that means appreciating the very fact famous Bruce Lee understood a long time ago: “If you love life, don’t waste time, for time is what life is made up of.”

Re-evaluate how you are spending your time and eliminate the tasks that don’t serve you on an emotional level.

“Put your energy into building what is creative, valuable and empowering. And you won’t have to constantly fight against what is destructive and draining.
~ Ralph Marston

Time for Action

  • What are you currently doing with your time? List the 10 to 15 activities or tasks that usually fill up your time.
  • Which 5 items from the previous list generally drain you from your energy and motivation, and don’t serve you on the journey to your ultimate WHY?
  • Which 5 items from the previous list energise you, put a smile on your face and get you out of bed in the morning?
  • Which of the draining activities can you reduce, delegate or eliminate completely? (Is it necessary that you do this? Can somebody else handle it? If you eliminate it, will anybody miss it? Why do you do it? Do you want to look busy, or do you not have the courage to say NO? Does it have a positive impact or contribution to one of your goals?)

The people

Hans F. Hansen famously said: “People inspire you, or they drain you – pick them wisely.” It is important that you surround yourself with people that are willing to challenge and support you towards greatness. Sometimes we must realise, that some people can stay in our heart, but not our lives.

“Your outlook upon life, your estimate of yourself, your estimate of your value are largely colored by your environment. Your whole career will be modified, shaped, moulded by your surroundings, by the character of the people with whom you come in contact every day.”
~ Orison Swett Marden

Time for action

  • Which people in your life motivate you, support you, and serve as constant inspiration to reaching your goals?
  • Which people in your life achieve the complete opposite and drag you down, create constant drama and hold you back or slow you down to reaching your goals?
  • Why have you chosen to hold on to these people?

Although decluttering is an immensely powerful and liberating undertaking, such a task can sometimes feel incredibly complicated and overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be! Follow our tips and learn how to declutter the different areas in your life, get more time and reach your goals. Now over to you: what does your environment look like?

“Dare to make a difference!”
